Concertations of market players from CH₄, H₂ & CO₂: future prospects
NaTran and Téréga organize consultations to assess methane, hydrogen and CO2 transport infrastructure needs to 2035
Context
After a first successful consultation dedicated toH2 market players in 2021, NaTran and Teréga are joining forces once again to perpetuate this dynamic interaction and extend it to 2025.
On April 4, 2025, the two French gas transmission operators are launching a consultation process aimed at all stakeholders and players in theH2,CO2 and CH4 markets.
Objectives
The aim of this consultation is to strengthen the shared vision of transport needs up to 2035, but also to animate the ecosystem by providing medium- and long-term visibility on the CH4,H2 andCO2 transport infrastructures of current and future customers, and to agree on certain hypotheses with a view, in particular, to feeding the Ten-Year Development Plans (PDD).
This consultation process is intended to be renewed on a regular basis, to ensure that the evolving needs of stakeholders are taken into account, and to guarantee that the co-construction process serves the public interest.
NaTran and Teréga are committed to :
- submit to a wide-ranging consultation the methodological framework and assumptions of their various analyses to meet their current missions;
- foreshadow the transposition into French law of the4th European Gas Package on hydrogen and carbon-free gas markets.
Discussions with stakeholders and players will focus on the narratives, scenarios and analyses shared by NaTran and Teréga, in order to :
- Strengthen their analyses of CH4 flux trends to 2035;
- Inform theH2 roadmap;
- Feed theCO2 roadmap.
The aim of the consultation is to check that the spectrum of scenarios covers the uncertainties and developments envisaged by the various stakeholders, and then to consolidate it with input from the players who live the market.
It is this framework of agreed hypotheses that NaTran and Terega will subsequently use in their various analyses.
Target players
The consultation is open to all stakeholders and players in these markets until the end of June, including network operators, manufacturers, infrastructure managers, public and institutional players, trade associations and academics...
Calendar
- April 4, 2025: a webinar to launch and provide information on the process.
- May 13, 2025: a half-day of workshops:
- Morning: a specific workshop on the hydrogen vector, focusing in particular on development scenarios for this market;
- Afternoon: a specific workshop onCO2 logistics.
- June 3, 2025: a workshop on the methodological framework and assumptions to be considered in analyses of CH4 flow trends to 2035.
Practical details
During the launch webinar, NaTran and Teréga will present :
- The approach and framework of hypotheses on which they propose to base their prospective analyses;
- Several major narratives or scenarios for national and import/export trajectories.
During the workshops dedicated toH2,CO2 and CH4, NaTran and Teréga propose to consult experts on the various subjects in greater depth. This should enable them to consolidate the framework of hypotheses in detail, as well as to discuss the tools and methods that NaTran and Teréga intend to implement for the various analyses to be carried out.
Expert input will be gathered via questionnaires, technical exchanges during workshops, and bilateral meetings on request.
Why participate?
- Receive aggregated information from NaTran and Teréga on the outlook for evolving needs and their impact on transport infrastructures.
- Co-build the analytical framework (hypotheses) on which NaTran and Teréga will base their vision of the future of energy infrastructures.
- Contribute to the right sizing of networks, built as close as possible to their needs and at the right cost
- Exchange ideas with all participants.
